RALEIGH, N.C. — Cooler, dryer air moved into central and eastern North Carolina early Thursday, and it will stay put for the most part during the next several days.

Only one day – Saturday – in the next five will include a significant chance for precipitation, although cloud cover could be a consistent feature of the forecast, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"You'll notice the much dryer air that moved into the area late Wednesday and overnight," she said. "We're done with the wet weather for a couple of days, at least."

Thursday will begin partly cloudy across much of the area, but clouds will fill in through the afternoon and evening as highs reach only into the mid-40s. No rain is expected, but the clouds will help keep temperatures below normal.

Overnight lows will return to near freezing early Friday, but more plentiful sunshine will help daytime highs climb to near 50 degrees.

"We'll have a chance for some rain on the first day of the weekend, especially to the south and east of the Triangle," Gardner said. "A low pressure system will move up the coast, and it's going to be a grey, dreary day."

Highs Saturday will reach only the mid-40s.

Sunshine will return on the second day of the weekend, and highs will climb into the low 50s, close to normal for early February.

Colder air will be back in the Triangle by Monday, however, and daytime highs during the first half of the work week could struggle to climb out of the upper 30s.
