Cool, dry air arriving behind first of two passing fronts
Cooler, drier air made its way into central North Carolina early Wednesday, thanks to a passing cold front, and another approaching system on track to arrive Thursday will keep conditions pleasant throughout the weekend, WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner said.

"We're really going to see some gorgeous weather in the next several days," Gardner said. "We saw dew points dip into the 60s overnight, and that is really going to help create some beautiful conditions."
Much of the area will see abundant sunshine Wednesday as daytime highs climb into the mid- and upper 80s. Areas close to the coast could see a passing afternoon shower, but the Triangle should stay dry.
Temperatures will inch up slightly Thursday, but the lower dew points will stay put as the second cold front moves through the state and strengthens a northwesterly flow.
The passage of the second front will help create "perfect" football weather for area high schools and colleges, Gardner said.
On Friday, highs will top out in the low 80s and fall into the mid-70s by the time area schools begin the third week of the regular season. By 10 p.m., temperatures will fall into the upper 60s.
When the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill kicks off at 12:30 p.m. on Saturday, temperatures will be in the upper 70s to near 80 degrees.
In Raleigh, fans attending the 6 p.m. tilt between North Carolina State University and Richmond should expect temperatures near 80 degrees at kickoff.
