In February, during the State of the State address, Gov. Pat McCrory became emotional talking about Highway Patrol Trooper Michael Potts. Potts, who survived being shot on the job, stood in the balcony of the House chamber to recognize the standing ovation. It was a moment of respect and appreciation for the sacrifices of a lawman.

Kay Reyna saw it. She was moved for Trooper Potts, but deeply frustrated for her husband, Humberto Reyna.

Reyna was a trooper working an accident in 2009 when a car crashed into the back of his cruiser.

Kay Reyna says her husband never returned home that day. Various doctors diagnosed him with a severe brain injury and other issues related to the crash.
