LOUISBURG, N.C. — A worker was killed last weekend while repairing a sewer line in Louisburg, police said Wednesday.

Ricardo Rios Telles, 34, of Princeton, was part of a four-person crew working on the sewer line at the intersection of Elm and Short streets for Apex-based DeVere Construction Co., police said.

Telles was trying to hook a chain around the sewer line to a backhoe at about 9:30 a.m. Saturday when the backhoe operator's shirt became entangled with the machine's controls, police said. The backhoe's bucket was forced down on top of Telles, crushing him between the bucket and the concrete sewer line.

The state Department of Labor is investigating the incident.
