Construction work, Irma evacuees may create I-95 delays

Posted September 12

— Transportation officials say the combination of repair work and the return of Hurricane Irma evacuees could create traffic delays on a stretch of Interstate 95 in North Carolina.

The S.C. Department of Transportation closed the interstate's right southbound lane today at Exit 186, which is south of the state line, to allow workers to install a concrete barrier. South Carolina officials said the lane is expected to be closed for at least one day.

Other stretches of I-95 southbound in North Carolina were congested Tuesday as those who evacuated ahead of Hurricane Irma return south. To ease the congestion, the N.C. Department of Transportation has suspended lane closures during the day for the southbound lanes of Interstates 95 and 77 and the eastbound lanes of I-26.
