SMITHFIELD, N.C. — The owner of a Smithfield computer shop was charged Monday with keeping customers' computers after closing down his business, police said.

Mark Edward White was charged with 18 counts of felony conversion and one count of misdemeanor conversion. He was being held Tuesday in the Johnston County Jail under a $101,000 bond.

Customers of Laptop Pros contacted Smithfield police in March to notify investigators that the business had closed without notice and that their computers were never returned. The shop's owner wouldn't return phone calls, customers told police.

Investigators determined that White Computers Inc., which White owns, leased the building that Laptop Pros occupied, police said. So, charges were filed against him.
