Man accused of shooting US diplomat competent to stand trial

Posted August 11

— A California man accused of shooting a U.S. diplomat in Mexico has been ruled competent to stand trial.

At a pretrial hearing Friday in federal court in Alexandria, a defense attorney for Zia Zafar of Chino Hills, California, agreed that Zafar is competent to stand trial.

Court records indicate Zafar was ordered to undergo a mental evaluation back in May. Prosecutors said Friday that the evaluation determined he is competent.

Zafar is charged with attempted murder of a diplomat in the Jan. 6 shooting of consular officer Christopher Ashcraft in Guadalajara. Part of the shooting was captured on video.

The charges were filed in Virginia because Zafar was brought into the country in the Eastern District of Virginia, where Dulles International Airport is located.
