The State Board of Community Colleges passed an emergency rule Friday allowing employees to take a 0.5 percent reduction in their annualized salary and to receive in return 10 hours of flexible leave to be taken between May 15 and December 31, 2009.

The rule comes as a result of Gov. Bev Perdue’s executive order that state employees take the pay cut to ease the burden on the strained state budget.

The board also heard from Dr. Stuart Fountain, chairman of the policy committee about the issue of admissions for students who are illegal immigrants. Fountain said his committee has developed a plan of action based on a report from a consultant on the issue.

The committee will review options for admitting students who are illegal immigrants at a public meeting on June 18 at Randolph Community College at 10 a.m.
