KNIGHTDALE, N.C. — One person died early Wednesday when a tractor-trailer carrying fructose syrup collided with a car while eastbound on the U.S. Highway 64 Bypass between Knightdale and Wendell, state Highway Patrol officials said.

Kelly Nacole Keene Nichols, 27, made an improper lane change and cut in front of the tractor-trailer, causing the truck to hit her car, collide with the median barrier and overturn, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 12:20 a.m. near Exit 429.

No other details were released.

The two right lanes of U.S. 64 East were closed for several hours Wednesday morning while crews worked to clear the scene.
