— One person died early Wednesday when a tractor-trailer carrying fructose syrup collided with a car while eastbound on the U.S. Highway 64 Bypass between Knightdale and Wendell, state Highway Patrol officials said.

Kelly Nacole Keene Nichols, 27, made an improper lane change and cut in front of the tractor-trailer, causing the truck to hit her car, collide with the median barrier and overturn, authorities said.

The crash occurred at about 12:20 a.m. near Exit 429.

No other details were released.

The two right lanes of U.S. 64 East were closed for several hours Wednesday morning while crews worked to clear the scene.

The sharp bump at the bridge at 429 doesn't help. The road has settled several inches below the bridge deck. It bounches my 4X4 pickup significantly. I imagine it's much worse in a tractor trailer. Also the road btween the two Wendell exits 429 & 432) is flat i.e. no crown. The DOT put down a special porous asphalt mix a few years ago to help shed water but accidents still happen there.

I commute from Raleigh to Wendell, and while accidents are relatively rare it is impressive how many tractor trailer accidents occur on a seemingly benign stretch of US 64 between 429 (64 Business) and 432 (Lizard Lick!). The only thing I can think is the highway choking down to two lanes (over a relatively long stretch) and the transitions to the concrete bridges that resemble rally cross ramps.
