Cold front to bring spotty showers, much colder Christmas Eve temps

Saturday will be unusually warm for mid-December, according to WRAL meteorologist Mike Moss, but don't worry -- even though a white Christmas is out of the question, the holiday will still be appropriately chilly.

RALEIGH, N.C. — Saturday's unexpected warmth made for a pleasant day of last-minute holiday shopping, but the mild conditions won't last.

WRAL Aimee Wilmoth said the Triangle approached record temperatures in the 70s Saturday. But a cold front is on it's way and will be here by Christmas Eve morning.

Unseasonably warm Saturday

"Winter weather in the West and Midwest could make for some pretty tricky travel on Christmas Eve," WRAL meteorologist Aimee Wilmoth warned.

As for North Carolina, Wilmoth said a cold front will push across the area overnight into early Sunday, turning temperatures much cooler.

7-Day Forecast

The cold front could bring some spotty showers as the area goes from warm to cold.

Highs on Sunday will be in the low 50s, and Christmas Day will be much colder, with a high of 43 degrees.

You'll definitely need a jacket if you head out to church or dinner on Christmas Eve.

"Christmas Day looks cold," Wilmoth said. "It will be dry, but it will be cold with highs in the 40s."

The rest of the week will be cold, but sunny, before some interesting weekend weather.

With highs in the 30s and precipitation possible, there's a chance of snow or freezing rain at the end of week.

"We're certainly keeping a close eye Thursday night into Friday morning as this system moves in," Wilmoth said.

Meteorologists said it's too early to know details and the exact areas that could be affected.

"Stay tuned for that," Wilmoth said.
