HATTERAS, N.C. — The U.S. Coast Guard in North Carolina on Tuesday urged mariners not to transit South Ferry Channel near Hatteras Inlet because of shoaling.

Recent surveys indicate shoaling in South Ferry Channel has left the channel with an average depth of less than 2 feet.

Current navigational aids in and around South Ferry Channel do not reflect accurate channel depth, officials said. The Coast Guard is analyzing options for removing navigational aids near South Ferry Channel.

Boaters who transit through South Ferry Channel do so at their own risk, officials said.

The Coast Guard said it will continue to monitor the conditions of the waterway and  keep mariners updated.
