Coast Guard suspends search for kite surfer

Posted September 20, 2011

— The Coast Guard has suspended its search for a missing kite surfer off Hatteras Island, authorities said Tuesday.

The unidentified 44-year-old man was last seen Sunday evening, authorities said. Dare County 911 dispatchers contacted the Coast Guard at about 6 p.m. Sunday and reported the surfer’s board and kite were located in the shoals without him.

Rescue crews from Hatteras Inlet and the Coast Guard Air Station in Elizabeth City searched more than 2,500 square miles without finding the man, authorities said.

According to a friend of a friend: The sea was huge and his kite went down and he couldn't get it out. Thoughts and prayers to the family.

What is significant here is that someone is missing, not whether he was kitesurfing or windsurfing.

Was he windsurfing or kiteboarding? "Kitesurfing" isn't a word, or at best it's misleading.

    Awww, praying he's ok.

Praying those who love him and those who searched for him.

If he's unidentified, how does the CG know he's 44? Unless unidentified = next of kin haven't been notified?
