COLUMBIA, N.C. — The Coast Guard and state and local authorities were searching Tuesday for two men from a reported downed helicopter in the vicinity of Albemarle Sound.

The men departed from Mecklenburg Brunswick Regional Airport in Brodnax, Va., on Monday and planned to land at Dare County Regional Airport that evening. But a friend notified the Coast Guard at about 6:40 p.m. Monday that he had lost contact with them.

On Tuesday morning, a good Samaritan recovered a backpack containing personal belongings about 3.5 miles south of the mouth of the Alligator River, authorities said. A MH-60 Jayhawk helicopter aircrew from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City later spotted helicopter debris in the water about 9 miles north of the Alligator River Bridge.

In addition to the Jayhawk helicopter, a Coast Guard HC-130 Hercules aircrew and a 29-foot response boat crew, both from Coast Guard Air Station Elizabeth City; Tyrrell County deputies; state Wildlife Resources Commission agents; and a state Marine Patrol boat crew were taking part in the search.
