Raleigh, N.C. — A North Carolina-based U.S. Coast Guard crew Thursday morning rescued a 62-year-old man injured on his sailboat overnight far off the coast of Kill Devil Hills.
The man, who has not yet been identified, sent a distress call from his sailboat Austina at about 8:30 p.m. Wednesday after falling and injuring his hip about 100 miles offshore. Inclement weather prevented a Coast Guard helicopter crew from rescuing the man that night, although a nearby tanker ship and another airplane crew remained on the scene throughout the night.
A second Coast Guard crew was able to reach the man at 7 a.m. Thursday, when he was evacuated to Air Station Elizabeth City and a nearby hospital.
