Posted — UpdatedThe Triangle could see some rain as early as Wednesday evening.
"The rain chances through midnight are only about 30 percent," said WRAL meteorologist Nate Johnson.
Communities in western North Carolina saw light showers Wednesday morning.
"We've seen some light showers and sprinkles moving through early, but a lot of the rain is falling apart as it gets over the mountains," said WRAL meteorologist Elizabeth Gardner. "We'll see our chances for noticeable rainfall and thunderstorms go up during the afternoon and evening."
Cloud cover kept temperature in the low 80s through midday Wednesday.
Rain showers will linger overnight and into the day Thursday, and some parts of the western Triangle could see a half inch to an inch of rain by the time the system moves out late Thursday.
"Thursday is going to be a wet day," Gardner said. "Showers will probably impact our morning commute and stick with us throughout the day."
Daytime highs will stay well below normal on Thursday thanks to the rain, topping out in the low 80s.
Sunshine will help push temperatures back into the low 90s Friday and Saturday, but overnight lows will stay in the upper 60s.
