Question: How and why does thunder make noise but no light?

Answer: Thunder is noise that is caused by lightning, and resultswhen the rush of charged particles along a lightning path almost instantly heats air to around 50,000 deg F, greatly raising its pressure. The air expands explosively, creating a shock wave that quickly transforms into sound waves as it moves outward. These sound waves are what we then hear as the crash or rumble of thunder.
