— Police on Wednesday charged a Clayton woman with the abuse of 3-year-old her son late last month.

Clayton police arrested Aquilla Yvette Stewart, 40, of 75 Herndon Court, for negligent child abuse that has kept her son in the hospital for two weeks.

Stewart faces one count of felony negligent child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. She is being held in the Johnston County Jail on a $150,000 bond.

The case dates back to Oct. 24, when Stewart called 911 to report an unconscious person at her home in the Mitchiner Hills neighborhood.

Stewart said her son had fallen the day before but had appeared normal until she made the call.

According to Clayton police, the 3-year-old boy had suffered an injury that required him to receive medical attention immediately, which Stewart neglected.

The boy was taken to the WakeMed Children’s ER and later transferred to the Duke Children’s Hospital Pediatric Intensive Care Unit.

Since being admitted to Duke, the boy has undergone multiple surgeries to treat brain and skull injuries.

On Nov. 2, the Clayton Police Department received an intake complaint from the Johnston County Department of Social Services that resulted in Stewarts’s arrest Wednesday.

Negligent child abuse, that's redundant. That must mean there is attentive child abuse?
