Chimney Rock reopens after road repairs

Posted September 12, 2008

— Repairs have been completed at Chimney Rock State Park, where Tropical Storm Fay's heavy rains damaged roads.

Chminey Rock, in Rutherford County, had been closed since Sept. 2, when crews began emergency repairs. Downpours had weakened a retaining wall along the park's 3-mile entrance road.

A record 11 inches of rain fell at the park over 48 hours while Fay passed.

Food service has resumed at the Sky Lounge, where a small mudslide had severed a sewer line.

perhaps instead of closing the trails they can work harder at making people watch their children.

Yes, but have they re-opened the upper hiking trails? We were out there in June and very disappointed when we learned both the cliffside and the skyline trails were closed (because of the tragedy when the child fell and died earlier this year.)

Evidently the state, which now owns the once private park, closed them to do "a review". So I don't expect them to be open for the next year or two...
