Chavis Park carousel work behind schedule, over budget
Plans to renovate Chavis Park in southeast Raleigh are running over budget and behind schedule, officials said Tuesday.

Crews are refurbishing and repainting the carousel, including constructing a building near the community center to house it. The carousel, which dates to the late 1910s or early 1920s, is a designated Raleigh Historic Landmark.
Raleigh officials asked the City Council for an extra $17,000 to finish the project, which was supposed to be complete by the end of the year. Officials said it could take an extra 45 days to complete.
The council approved a $1.8 million contract for Chavis Park improvements last January. In addition to the carousel, it included site work, a new water line and lighting.
