Chatham woman faces attempted murder charge

State troopers said that a Chapel Hill woman ran over a man early Thursday after they got into an argument and he got out of the car she was driving.

PITTSBORO, N.C. — A Chatham County woman accused of running over a Pittsboro man earlier in March was arrested on three new charges Tuesday.

Margaret Jones, 23, of 340 Mountain Laurel in Chapel Hill, was charged with assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, assault inflicting serious bodily injury and felony serious injury by motor vehicle.

She had initially been charged with driving while impaired and failure to reduce speed to avoid striking a pedestrian.

State troopers said that Jones argued with two passengers in her backseat, then pulled over along Russell Chapel Road early March 10. The men got out of her car, and Jones took off, striking 20-year-old Charles Washington Jr., troopers said.

Washington was seriously injured and taken to UNC Hospitals.

Jones was placed in the Chatham County jail under a $10,000 secured bond. Her first court appearance was set for April 4.
