BEAR CREEK, N.C. — The Chatham County Board of Education voted unanimously against a cost-saving proposal that would reconfigure grade assignments at county schools to better balance enrollment during a meeting at Chatham Central High School Monday.

The proposal would have reconfigured five district schools from kindergarten through 8th grade to K-5 or grades 6 through 8. About 940 students would have been affected.

Hundreds of parents protested the reconfiguration plan at a public hearing Feb. 15.

The school system is facing a projected $4.5 million budget shortfall for the 2011-12 school year. Board members are expected to submit the district's 2011-12 budget proposal to the county in mid-April.
