Chatham schools plan delay due to cold

Posted January 15, 2009

Chatham County Schools will open two hours late Friday, the district announced.

The delay was put in place to allow students waiting at bus stops to avoid the coldest part of the day. Early morning temperatures are expected to be in the teens, and the National Weather Service post a wind-chill advisory through 9 a.m.

All faculty and staff should report to work at their regular times.

Families can expect to receive notification from individual schools about potential changes to the schedule.

It has also not been this cold in several years. The buses are not used to starting in such temperatures. If these vehicles are not used to starting in such cold there is a good chance they will not start. When you factor in a large bus fleet and several children waiting, I think it is easier to see why the superintendent made his decision.

People who are comparing the situation back to those of that to their own town you are comparing apples and oranges.

Also, I would like to point out that after reading some of these posts, I can see why we have a lack of teachers and professionals going in to education. They simply get tired of ignorant comments.

wolfpack is right. Our buses ARE breaking down as I type. At our school, we already have 3 buses broken down and we are having to figure out how to get those kids plus the ones waiting outside.

So, Chatham county may be more rural than other places. But I'm sure there are plenty of other rural places north of here that dont have schools delayed unless it's -18, not 18...I dont think the kids in chatham county are more prone to freeze than those kids...

I guess that many of you just done understand the superintendents decision to open up schools an hour later. Chatham County schools are different from others especially Wake County. Some parts of Chatham County are very rural and several of the children do not have money to buy jackets or gloves. Also, comments were made about how come the parents could not just wait at the bus stop, well unlike other counties most families in Chatham County both parents work and are unable to sit at the bus stop.

The decision was made so that children would not have to sit out in the cold in case buses broke down. I say that it is better to be safe than sorry. Many of you are unable to relate and have never had to make decisions that effected the lives of that many people.

I lived in Alaska for a few years now that was cold. Do you think the busses stopped when it was in the teens?...nope... If I remember correctly schools closed at around -20 and below. So I have seen kids wait outside for the bus in that weather. Its called a jacket and gloves get some, and while your at it stop and get a can of motivation for this generation of wimps or a can of spinage! We need another Gen. Patton

This is just another poor scheduling decision on the part of the system. Monday is a holiday, and then Tuesday and Wednesday are "teacher workdays". Chatham County Schools administration must be taking notes from the county commissioners!

Wimps making decisions to raise another generation of even bigger wimps. What a way to prepare people for the real word. The high temp for tomorow is only suppose to be 27 degrees. I really don't think it's going to matter if they temp is 10 degrees at 6:30 am instead of 12 degrees at 8:30.

Since I leave the house at 6:30 for work, can I go in 2 hours later also????

why not go ahead and have two hour delays for all schools...

  • Not a fan of roses Jan 15, 2009

Seriously? This is ridiculous. Back home (Iowa) schools are closed because of the negative 40 degree wind chill, snow, and wind. Not because the temps are going to hit the 20's. Big difference.
