— An assistant teacher and bus driver at Silk Hope School in Siler City was arrested Thursday after Chatham County deputies said they found a loaded gun in her possession.

Elizabeth Truitt, 49, of 247 Baltimore Road in Advance, is charged with felonious possession of a weapon on school property, possession of marijuana and possession of drug paraphernalia.

School officials received consent to search her property and found a loaded Smith and Wesson .38 caliber revolver in her possession, deputies said. During the investigation, deputies searched a trash can and located one ounce of marijuana and several assorted items of paraphernalia that a witness said Truitt was attempting to hide from officials.

The school was temporarily put on lockdown status as a precaution.

Truitt was released under a $10,000 bond Thursday afternoon. She is scheduled to appear in Chatham County District Court in Pittsboro on April 12.

findoutthefacts, no you won't because this story never made to the top voted stories and of course if she had been black, it would have been #1 and you need to read the posts because someone said that she had no other choice to be packing because of where she worked, what kind of excuse is that?

  • findoutthefacts Mar 26, 2010

Well what I can promise you wakemom and bronzegoddess is that you won't see comments like:

"Don't judge her" and "you don't know what she's been through" and "racism caused her to do this"

You know....the excuses that are given when another race commits these crimes!

This woman has been at this school for many many years, I can assure you that she had a clean slate when she was hired. BUT, this further tells us, parents, grandparents, state leaders and most of all our KIDS. WE NEED RANDOM DRUG TEST DONE. Forget obesity and lets get the drugs and guns out of the schools.

I live not far from the school,And what sets me on fire is ,I was called from the school saying my grandson was sick ,and someone needed to come pick him up,by the time I called his mom and I called back to school to check on him ,all this went down. I was never told on the phone that the school was on lock down, or anything about this all I was told was all the kids are safe and back in their classroom,How much longer would have took to say the school is on lockdown ,but everyones ok
And this Teacher looks mean ,whoever hired her sure had our kids best interest at heart. These are our heart and sole you messing with Chatham county wise up.

Silk Hope is a small community everyone knows everyone so i doubt she needed the gun for protection at school. This is a very safe and friendly community.I go to bed every night with my doors unlucked .

She was carrying it for her protection. As for the weed...well I don't know. I do know this...if you are a teacher in Durham Public Schools next year, you better have your own protection with you. A friend said that the Durham Police are raising their rate of pay for offduty officers to $28.00 per hour in July. The schools can't afford that, they are already looking at cutting teaching jobs and are begging for help from the county comissioners. What in the world is the Chief of Police for Durham thinking...well maybe he is not. Somebody needs to wake him up. Asleep during the overtime scandal, now asleep during these tough economic times. I am glad my child is finishing high school this year. Oh, my friend says that none of the officers wanted this, it was coming from the top brass in the department. Durham city council get ready for some officers coming to city hall for more pay from you, now that you have allowed for the ones working at the schools to get laid off. I am sur

"beleave it or not white peeple commit crimes too...probally ythe most...just the media dont cover it often and the courts dont sentance them"

    1st part very true
2nd part.......amazing if it is actually believed. The media dont cover it? Yes and next we will find out it's society's fault that people don't go to work and live off my tax money.

I would love to know who does the hiring for our school systems and what they are thinking when they hire some of these people. I have had children in the school system for the last 19 years and still do have 2 in the Chatham County School system. It has been a very good experience until this year, we moved so my boys had to change schools the youngest has been locked in a closet two different times by the teacher, I ask the county office was this aceptable i also ask if my child came to school and told i locked him in the closet what would happen i was told they would call DSS.Plz do not get me wrong we do have some wonderful teachers and most of them are at JM and Bonlee and JS Waters.
