Chase ends on I-85 in Durham

Posted March 5, 2010

— State troopers chased a driver in Durham and Orange counties Friday afternoon at speeds reaching 100 mph, Sergeant Jeff D. Gordon of the state Highway Patrol said.

Troopers attempted to stop a man driving a black SUV on 15th Street in Durham. He fled and led authorities into Orange County and back into Durham on Interstate 85, Gordon said.

During the chase, the driver struck a Highway Patrol car, doing minor damage. The SUV and a second patrol car also sustained minor damage. Two troopers and the driver of the SUV were injured. None of the injuries were serious.

The chase ended on I-85 near N.C. Highway 147 when troopers were able to pull alongside the vehicle and force the driver to swerve and stop, a method called a PIT maneuver.

Troopers did not say why they tried to stop the car in the first place or release the identity of the man arrested.

HEREANDNOW: When are they going to catch someone going REALLY fast...like 4th gear speed (out of 6)?

They're not. Those are the ones that get away. You think a Detroit Hemi Charger can stand up to an E55 AMG? Hehe....Of course the guys driving the AMG's, M6's, RS8's and Ferrari's aren't generally running from the law either, but they ARE out on un-openned stretches of interstate or doing 6AM runs of 180+ down east where I40 is REALLY empty! Big difference though than zigzagging down 147 at 95mhp at rush hour!

"What's up with all of the car chases lately!"

Nothing. If you watch and pay attention to the news, you will see that whatever the hot item is one day, it will remain until something else spectacular comes along and replaces it. At least with WRAL. Trust me, high speed chases happen more than you know. Have you heard much about Rocky Mount lately? The media will make you think that all of sudden there are these outbreaks of crime and activity when in all actuality, it happens e v e r y d a y! It is sad to me when people become uneasy because of what they read or hear on the news. Sure. Be concerned, but don't get sick over it.
