Chase continues after trailer overturns on I-40
The trailer of an 18-wheeler detached from its cab, catching on fire, during a police chase that went down Interstate 40 from Benson into Duplin County.
Posted — UpdatedA Benson police officer reported seeing a man trying to steal fuel from a gas station around 4 a.m. The man drove away in a tractor-trailer, and the officer pursued. State troopers joined the chase when it continued onto I-40 East at mile marker 330.
The trailer detached from the cab, flipped over several times and came to rest in the median, where it caught on fire, according to the wreck report.
The cab was not damaged, and its driver continued to flee from police, troopers said. The chase ended on I-40 in Duplin, where troopers arrested the driver.
No other vehicles were involved in the chase, and no injuries were reported in the wreck.
One lane of I-40 East was closed while crews put out the fire and cleared away the trailer. The scene has been cleared, and traffic returned to normal.
Officials at the Johnston County Jail confirmed that they have the tractor-trailer driver, Moses King, 50, of Faison, in custody. They did not release what charges King faces.
