Charleston school accidentally releases medical records

Posted August 29

— A private school in Charleston is apologizing after it accidentally released students' medical records to parents.

The Post and Courier of Charleston reported that administrators at Ashley Hall apologized for what they called an "inadvertent professional error" where school emailed dozens of students' medical records to parents.

School officials say a staff member at the all-girls' school forwarded an email from a school nurse practitioner Friday asking parents to update their children's medication paperwork.

The records included a spreadsheet with many students' medical details, including allergies, medical conditions, psychiatric diagnoses and medications.

Assistant Head of School Anne Weston wrote parents an email Saturday and asked that parents delete the email and send an email confirming they had done so.

A school spokeswoman would not talk about the situation Monday.
