HALIFAX, N.C. — Charges have been dropped against four men accused in the shotgun killing of another man in Roanoke Rapids earlier this year.

The Daily and Sunday Herald of Roanoke Rapids reports a judge ruled Thursday there was no probable cause to continue murder charges against Charles "Ossie" Hockaday, Damien E. "Dang Dang" Mitchell and Trayvon Purnell. Court officials said charges also have been dropped against Robbie A. Jones Jr.

All four men were arrested in the April killing of 29-year-old Jerry Wayne Yellorday. Police said two men shot Yellorday while he sat in a car.

Maj. Bruce Temple said the investigation into the killing will continue, but would not say if hthe Halifax County Sheriff's Office still considers the four men suspects.

Mitchell had been jailed after his arrest for violating his probation from a 2006 conviction on two counts of assault with a deadly weapon with intent to kill inflicting serious injury, according to state Department of Correction records.
