Chapel Hill police trying to ID would-be robber

Police on Tuesday asked for the public's help in identifying a man who attempted to people in the parking lot of Granville Towers early Sunday.

CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — Police on Tuesday asked for the public's help in identifying a man who attempted to rob people in the parking lot of Granville Towers early Sunday.

A man brandishing a handgun approached people sitting in an SUV in the parking lot off West Franklin Street at about 3:45 a.m. Sunday, police said. The man began knocking on the windows, but the SUV occupants drove off, police said.

The would-be robber was described as a white man or light-skinned black man, about 6 feet tall, wearing a black leather jacket with a hoodie. He also had a blue bandanna covering his face.

The man was last seen running in the direction of Rosemary Street, police said.
