Posted May 23, 2014

— Chapel Hill police asked for the public's help Friday to locate a man wanted for taking a bicycle worth about $5,000 from a shop at University Mall.

Investigators said the man took the Orbea Ordu bicycle, which is black with red accents, from TrySports on April 26.

Anyone with information about the theft should call the Chapel Hill Police Department at 919-968-2883 or Crime Stoppers at 919-942-7515.

Crime Stoppers is offering a cash reward of up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest.

This repulses me. Who gives anyone the right to go into a store and steal. We see it time and again in our neighborhoods. What is this, an extension of the entitlement mentality that has become so pervasive in our nation?

That Orbea is a fantastic machine and easily worth $5K, people. There's nothing lower than a bicycle thief, so let's hope he is caught soon.

Love how people harp on the price of things that have no value to them. I'm sure some think it's absurd to blow $25k on a backpacking trip to Europe, to have a $30k engagement ring or a $500k home, but I'd bet people who do or own those things don't agree with that stance. I've got several bikes in the $3k-$8k price range. Cheap bikes don't make for very comfortable 100-mile bike rides. The better the ride, the more expensive it's going to be. That's the nature of pretty much everything. The more technology pumped into the development, the bigger the price tag. That's why you don't see $5,000 Schwinn's...

There ARE bikes worth $5K - to some people. There are cars worth $500K - to some people. It all depends what you're into. I have several bikes but the ones I ride most are an Electra Amsterdam 8i I bought in about 2008 or '09 and a Raleigh 10 speed I've had since new in 1974. No $5K bikes there but I like 'em.

I guess it's worth it if it gives you the illusion that you're Lance Armstrong out there. *eye roll*
