Chapel Hill police seek Food Lion thief

Posted July 15, 2009

— Chapel Hill police are asking the public for help in identifying the culprit in a weekend break-in at Food Lion on Weaver Dairy Road. Police released surveillance images Wednesday of the suspect and a vehicle believed to be connected to the crime.

A person smashed a window at the store at about 4 a.m. Saturday, entered the store, filled a trash can with tobacco products and fled.

In the image, the suspect appears to be a black male, possibly bald, 6 feet 2 or 3 inches tall, wearing a green shirt, blue jeans, gloves and white and black shoes. The vehicle pictured appears to be a four-door 1989 or 1990 silver Toyota Corolla 4 door with damage above the front wheel well on the passenger side.

The same person may be responsible to break-ins at three other Food Lion stores, police said. The store at 101 N. Scotswood Blvd. in Hillsborough was robbed July 7; the store at 4621 Hillsborough Road in Durham was robbed Saturday; and the store at 2151 Wilton Ave. in Creedmoor was robbed Sunday.

Calls to Crime Stoppers are confidential and anonymous, and the caller may be eligible for a cash reward up to $2,000 for information that leads to an arrest.
