Chapel Hill Police K9 Dies of Cancer

Posted March 3, 2008

— The Chapel Hill Police Department bid farewell to a K9 officer who had been with the force for five years.

Early Friday, K9 "KC" began experiencing breath difficulties, and veterinarians found that KC was in the late stages of cancer. The seven-year-old German Shepherd had to be put down.

The Kiwanis Club of Chapel Hill donated the funds to purchase KC for the department nearly six years ago. After training, KC was partners with Officer Gabe Shinn for five years.

Officers thanked the Kiwanis Club for the years KC had served with them.

Officer Shinn-I'm really sorry. KC was not only your partner, but faithful friend. I know he has crossed over the Rainbow Bridge and he's not suffering anymore. God bless.

I lost my beloved 12 year old collie, Desdemona, to cancer a little over 2 years ago. It's tough to lose a friend, but bringing in another furry one helps. My youngest collie, Dakota, drives me crazy at times and he is the polar opposite of Desi but he is a sweetheart.

Sorry to hear KC has died. What a beautiful smart animal he was. His handler showed him to a group of scouts my son was involved in and both handler and K9 were great. Some people think oh well a dog died but to his handler he was so much more, he was a respect officer.
