CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — After more than a decade as town manager of Chapel Hill, Roger Stancil announced Wednesday that he plans to retire late next year.

Stancil was city manager of Fayetteville for 10 years before taking the top administrative post in Chapel Hill in 2006. He said he had planned to stay for only five to seven years.

"The town is in good shape for the future, and I am ready to begin another chapter in my life," he said in a letter to Mayor Pam Hemminger and Town Council members.

During his tenure, Stancil said, he accomplished several goals set for him by the council, including leadership development for town staff, improving the relationship between Chapel Hill and the University of North Carolina, making town services more efficient and customer-friendly, implementing a set of values to guide decisions by town leaders and addressing the need for more affordable housing.

"I am grateful for all the support I have received over the years, and I am confident Chapel Hill will continue to be a place where people thrive with connections, choices and community," he wrote in his letter.
