CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The Chapel Hill Town Council on Monday banned the use of pine straw for landscaping within 10 feet of commercial buildings, including apartments and townhouse complexes.

Several fires this year have started in pine straw after someone disposed of smoking material and quickly spread to structures, officials said. Drought conditions are aggravating the problem by drying out the dead pine needles, officials said.

Raleigh recently banned the use of pine straw near buildings and called for architectural changes to townhouse complexes after a fire ripped through 38 townhouses in February.
