A husband and wife escaped a house fire in Chapel Hill Tuesday morning, but their pet dogs didn't make it out alive.

<b>CHAPEL HILL, N.C.</b> — A husband and wife escaped a house fire in Chapel Hill Tuesday morning, but their pet dogs didn't make it out alive.

Fire Battalion Chief Keith Poterfield said the couple was sleeping when the fire broke out in their home at 416 Ridgefield Road around 6:15 a.m. They were uninjured, but their two dogs died.

The fire damaged about three-quarters of the single-story home. The cause hasn't been determined.

The 12-year-old boy had been required to sleep in a tube-like tent, enclosed by a solid plastic sheet. Upon discovering that the zipper for the tent was broken, the report says, "staff needed a zip tie out of the tool bag."

According to the Sampson County Sheriff's Office, a school resource officer discovered the body of a man inside a vehicle at Hobbton Middle School athletic field. Authorities believe the man died from a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
