RALEIGH, N.C. — The owner of Centro Mexican restaurant has started a crowdfunding program to raise the final funds for the state's first Mezcaleria.

Located above Centro, Gallo Pelon will serve Mezcal, a spirit made from fermented agave.

The journey to open the distillery and tasting room started two years ago. Centro ran into trouble during construction in the 100-year-old building.

"Every time we thought we were in the clear, another concern would pop up, inflating our budget and pushing us closer to the red. After passing the point of no return, we sat down with friends in the community and came to the conclusion that a crowd-sourced fundraiser was the perfect thing to raise that last 10 percent and get us past the finish line," Centro owner Angela Salamanca wrote on the project's Indiegogo page.

Gallo Pelon is described as a "place to drink, laugh and connect."

Owners are seeking a total of $30,000 by Jan. 27.
