Celebrate Groundhog Day with actual groundhogs

Posted January 27, 2014

Sir Walter Wally 2013

We have two chances in the Triangle to find out if all of this cold weather is going to last for another many weeks or if we'll get a peek at spring a little early this year.

Groundhog Day, Feb. 2, lands on Sunday this year.

Sir Walter Wally will make his prognostication at the N.C. Museum of Natural Sciences as he does every year. From noon to 5 p.m., Sunday, the downtown Raleigh museum will celebrate the day with a storytime, demonstrations and other activities. The actual shadow ceremony is slated for 1 p.m. Before and after the ceremony, you can meet Sir Wally.

Click here for details. The event is free. The museum has a weather watch activity guide with activities for kids in kindergarten to eighth grade.

Not to be outdone by his Raleigh brother, Mortimer the Groundhog will be making his own forecast in Garner. He'll be at Garner's White Deer Park, 2400 Aversboro Rd., to make his prediction during an afternoon of activities. It's 1 p.m. to 3:30 p.m., Sunday. The prediction will come at 3 p.m. As part of Sunday's event, they will release some rescued and rehabilitated birds.

Garner's event also will include crafts, music and contests. Special guests include Recycle Can Guy, Smokey Bear, the Chick-fil-A cow, McGruff the Crime Dog and Big Mortimer.

General parking will be at Lake Benson Park, 921 Buffaloe Rd., across the street from White Deer Park. Handicap accessible parking will be available at White Deer.
