RALEIGH, N.C. — The cause of an apartment fire that displaced dozens of people last month will likely never be known, authorities said.

A three-alarm fire ripped through two buildings of Brentwood East Apartments, at 3819 Bonneville Court near New Hope Church Road, on Aug. 20, damaging at least 14 units.

The fire started on a balcony of one of the apartments, but authorities said the damage to the building was so extensive that it would be difficult to pinpoint a cause.

About 90 people were displaced by the fire, and three people suffered injuries.
