Cary woman, granddaughter killed in Ohio crash

Posted June 16, 2015

— A Cary woman and her 5-year-old granddaughter died Sunday when the family's minivan ran off the side of a highway in Ohio, authorities said.

The family was heading to Chicago for a funeral when Rubena Elahi, 27, of Cary, fell asleep at the wheel at about 4 a.m., authorities said. The 2006 Honda Odyssey ran off northbound Interstate 75 north of Dayton, Ohio, hit a tree and ended up in a ditch.

Elahi's mother-in-law, Khurshid Chaudhry, 65, and her daughter Azan were killed in the crash. Chaudhry was in the front passenger seat, while Azan was lying across the third-row seats, authorities said.

Elahi and her husband, Muhammad Chaudhry, 28, were taken to a nearby hospital for treatment of non-life-threatening injuries.

Muhammad Chaudhry was seated in the second row with the couple's 2-year-old daughter, Izna, on his lap. The girl was treated at Dayton Children's Hospital for minor injuries.

The crash remains under investigation, and no charges have been filed.

Murder is the intentional taking of a life with premeditation and malice; this is not murder, though a child not in an appropriate car seat is against the law. BTW, are you suggesting the death of a child is not tragic? Back in the day when I was a kid seatbelts weren't required, let alone car seats for children. Amazing that we made it to adulthood considering the odds were against us.

This is terrible. With 3 adults in the car, I hope she wasn't the sole driver and this was simply her shift. Either way, to lose a mother and child at the same time is tragic.
