Cary repeals tax increase

Days after voting to raise local property taxes, the Town Council has voted to rescind the increase.

CARY, N.C. — Days after voting to raise local property taxes, the Town Council has voted to rescind the increase.

The council voted 5-2 to set Cary's tax rate at 33 cents per $100 of assessed value. The move came two days after the council voted to raise the rate to 37 cents per $100 of assessed value.

Councilwoman Jennifer Robinson asked her colleagues to reconsider the increase, citing her difficulty in voting for the measure and the struggling economy.

Council members Don Frantz and Gale Adcock also switched their votes.

Mayor Harold Weinbrecht and Councilwoman Julie Robison voted against repealing the increase, saying it would decrease funding for local projects.
