CARY, N.C. — The town of Cary will stop operating its red light cameras at 11:59 p.m. Saturday, officials said.

In a news release Wednesday, officials said drivers will be held responsible for any tickets they receive until the cameras are disabled. The citations are $50.

The announcement comes a week after the Town Council voted to get rid of the of 17 red light cameras that monitor 15 intersections. Over the eight years of the program, dubbed Safelight Cary, officials received hundreds of complaints from drivers who said they were improperly ticketed.

Cary Town Manager Benjamin Shivar suggested scrapping the program, citing a WRAL News report that found drivers were being improperly ticketed on left turns, as well as a lawsuit over the cameras, administrative costs and uncertainty about the state legislation authorizing the program.
