RALEIGH, N.C. — Cary police said Thursday that investigators have linked a Durham man accused of breaking into a Planet Smoothie last year to more than 30 other business break-ins in Wake County.

Police charged Darryl Lee Brown, 44, on July 3, 2009, with two counts of felony breaking-and-entering in connection with the smoothie store break-in and another case at Cary's Spirit's Pub & Grill.

Investigators have linked him to the other break-ins, which occurred between December 2008 and July 2009, Cary police said in a news release Thursday. Authorities did not say how they were able to connect him and did not say where the other break-ins occurred.

"With this arrest, we can bring closure to handfuls of business owners in Cary and beyond," Chief Pat Bazemore said.

Additional charges in other jurisdictions are pending against Brown.

Brown has spent nearly 18½ years in prison since 1984, serving time for multiple convictions for break-ins and larcenies in Durham, Orange and Richmond counties, according to state Department of Correction records.
