Cary police seek suspects who robbed bank in black robes

Posted June 3, 2013

— Police are looking for two men who were donned in black from head to toe when they robbed a Cary bank Monday morning.

Investigators said the men were armed and wearing black robes, face masks and scarves when they walked into Vantage South Bank, at 1005 High House Road, just after 9 a.m., demanded money and then fled on foot.

Police believe they may now be traveling in a red passenger car.

Further details about the car or the robbers' descriptions weren't immediately available, but investigators said they do not believe the robbery is related to one around 3 a.m. Sunday at McDonald's at 869 SE Maynard Road.

In that case, the men were wearing dark hooded sweatshirts, sunglasses and gloves, and their faces were covered with camouflage bandanas.

Anyone in the area during the time of either robberies or anyone who might have information that could help police solve the crimes is asked to contact the Cary Police Department at 919-469-4012 or Cary Crime Stoppers at 919-226-2746.

jcthai-you contradict yourself by saying let them go, then saying try to trap them in a tunnel with guns they can use against police when they try to enter...gas in the tunnel would be much better, or better yet just let them leave with it...it's just money

Yes it's mind-boggling to me that with today's technology there's seldom a clear photo. Nuns...too funny.

These 2 look like nuns...what will they think of next.

"I think all banks should have a knock-out gas system that is activated whenever there is a robbery in progress. It would make everyone unconscious until the police came and administered a wake-up serum. They could already have the robbers handcuffed before they woke them up."

That was tried in the infamous theater terrorist attack in Russia. The gas did successfully knock everybody out, and the terrorist suicide bombers were shot where they sat. However, a large number of the hostages died because the police and military involved in the assault did not know the protocol for reviving the hostages.

liberalmindset, easy. The little tunnel has a speaker. You announce to the robbers your intention to open the outer door. They have a choice. They can lay down their weapons and come out with their hands up, or they can keep their weapons and hope that none of the 3,157 bullets about to enter the doorway hits them.

Arm the tellers? Oh what a wonderful idea, said no one ever. Why do you find it so important for innocent civilians to take on the role of law enforcement? So they get the money and get away. So what? Is occasionally catching a bank robber in the bank worth a few dead tellers? Sigh. Let the police do their jobs. Eventually they will get caught.

You would think banks would have better cameras . The ones at casinos can see a booger on your nose

What was the bank doing wearing black robes, WRAL?

JohnDrescher: Really really bad idea. People with medical conditions sometimes don't wake up when you hit them with knockout gas.

Hugh Jarce: Banks in New York over 30 years ago had something like that. Perhaps they still do. You had to pass through 2 doors to enter the bank. This allowed the bank to check you out before you came in. However, in a bank robbery, the best thing to do once it starts is let the bad guys have the money and let them run away. Trying to do anything else gets people killed. The money is almost always stuffed with a dye pack, so they won't get to use it. FDIC can handle the loss if necessary.

How about instead of dye packs the bait cash is laced with ricin? That would stopped armed bank robbery dead in its tracks.

  • liberalmindset Jun 3, 2013

hugh-good idea...then how do you get them out of your "tunnel" when they are all armed??? how does this have anything to do with cary pd? are they supposed to be psychics now???
