Cary murder suspect accused of assaulting inmate

An arrest warrant shows Daniel Scott Remington, 36, was charged Tuesday with one count of simple assault after he allegedly punched inmate Charles Dennison Hodge, 46, while Hodge was asleep at the Wake County Detention Center.

The warrant doesn't say what might have provoked the attack.

Remington, of 501 Gooseneck Drive, Cary, was arrested in Fayetteville Saturday on a murder charge in Friday's fatal shooting of 58-year-old Wendy Jean Johnson.

Johnson, of Sanford, was in Cary for her job as a pediatric home health care nurse when she was shot in the parking lot in the 200 block of Hyde Park Court – less than two miles from where Remington lived.

She died early Saturday at Duke University Hospital in Durham.

Several people called 911 Friday night reporting a woman screaming for help in the parking lot after she was shot.

Authorities haven't commented on a possible motive for the shooting, but the father of Remington's live-in girlfriend said Tuesday that he believes it was a case of a robbery-gone-bad.

The man, who did identify himself by name, said Remington returned to the apartment Friday night to gather some belongings and then left. Police interviewed the girlfriend for several hours early Friday, he said, which led them to find Remington in Fayetteville.

Remington is being held in the Wake County jail without bond on the murder charge.

Johnson's funeral is planned for noon Saturday at New Hope Baptist Church in Sanford. A visitation is planned at the church for 10 a.m.
