Cary moving forward on expanding soccer stadium

Posted October 15, 2010

— The Cary Town Council on Thursday approved spending $265,000 to design an expansion to the WakeMed Soccer Park stadium.

Plans call for increasing stadium seating from 7,000 to 10,000 and building more team locker rooms. The park has hosted multiple NCAA championships, and officials said they want to keep the venue competitive for future bids.

The cost for the expansion is expected to be about $2.4 million.

just another spend money on the design project but never build it. they spent mucho on the easements and design for the downtown streetcape project and won't even build it.

I do know that when NCAA championships are held in Cary, every hotel room in the town and adjacent areas are booked. I've been to a few Railhawks games. I've rarely seen a sell-out. I hope that the revenue from room taxes, restaurants etc justify the cost of the expansion.

"Maybe this is a great move, but there's no way to know that based on the limited information presented here."

The reporter isn't trying to persuade you of anything; he's just reporting the facts. I'm sure your town council representative would be happy to tell you why it was a good idea.

I'd love to see more info. about this situation (attendance figures, revenue generated, location/finances of competing facilities, etc.). Also, a little clarity: is the money for the design of an expansion, or the expansion itself? Maybe this is a great move, but there's no way to know that based on the limited information presented here.
