Cary man committed to mental facility in Alabama man's murder
An Alabama judge on Monday ordered that a Cary man be committed to a state mental hospital after he killed a man who had offered him a place to stay last year, according to his defense attorney.
Posted — UpdatedZachary Stirewalt, 21, an Eagle Scout and former student at Appalachian State University, was charged with murder in the shooting death of Daniel Turman, 43, in November. He pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity.
Two psychiatrists found that Stirewalt suffers from a mental illness and was not competent to stand trial. Prosecutors didn't contest those findings, and the judge agreed – signing an order committing Stirewalt to Taylor Hardin Secured Medical Facility in Tuscaloosa, Ala.
He will remain at the facility for an undetermined amount of time and undergo extensive therapy.
Investigators said Stirewalt shot Turman several times while he slept.
Turman, a father of two, had offered Stirewalt temporary housing after learning that he recently left his home in North Carolina and had no place to live.
