Cary man accused of aiding terrorists in Syrian civil war

Posted November 11, 2013

— A Cary man has been indicted on a charge of trying to provide support to the Iraqi arm of al-Qaida by fighting in Syria's civil war.

Basit Javed Sheikh, 29, of 300 Swansboro Drive, was arrested at Raleigh-Durham International Airport on Nov. 2 shortly before boarding a plane to Canada, with a final destination of Lebanon, according to federal court documents.

An indictment against him was unsealed three days later.

Sheikh, a Pakistan native who also goes by the name Abdul Basit, is charged with one count of attempting to provide material support to a foreign terrorist organization.

According to the indictment, between April and the time of his arrest, he was arranging to provide personnel to al-Nusrah Front, an Iraqi group affiliated with al-Qaida that has claimed responsibility for hundreds of attacks in Syria in the last two years.

An affidavit of an FBI agent states that Sheikh repeatedly posted on his Facebook page links to news stories and videos backing a jihad in Syria. He also discussed with a government informant going to Syria to fight in that country's civil war and that he was ready to be a "martyr," according to the affidavit.

Believing the government informant could help smuggle him from Lebanon to Syria, authorities say, he purchased a one-way ticket to Lebanon.

An arrest report indicates Sheikh works at a local post office, but more information wasn't available Monday.

If convicted, Sheikh faces a maximum of 15 years in prison.

The case isn't the first of its kind in North Carolina.

Four years ago, federal agents broke up a terror cell based in Johnston County that authorities said was plotting terrorist attacks on the Marine base in Quantico, Va., and overseas targets.

Seven men are in prison after being convicted of various crimes, and an eighth is believed to have been killed in a U.S. drone strike in Pakistan.

For years, the US government has armed what people would call terrorists. We have encouraged wars. Look what we're doing in Syria now by arming the rebels. The rebels are going around killing people by the thousands. Those rebels are not friendly to Christians, either. I see them as no better a replacement than the current leadership in Syria.

So, for the US to argue that a person is aiding a group in a civil war in another country... that's just the pot calling the kettle black.

I wonder how many can answer this question? “Is the Muslim Brotherhood in America (MB)(Ikhwan) our friend or foe? Please provide me with links to the source material that provides you with your view(s).” Our roadblock is mainly at the federal level and neither the DEMONcrat Party nor the RINO/GOP leadership/followers in the soon to be defunct Republican Party will allow the House or Senate to hold hearings on the Muslim Brotherhood and the plan they wrote to destroy us. You can buy a copy of their plan at Amazon for only $5.00 An Explanatory Memorandum: From the Archives of the Muslim Brotherhood in America or, you can read an online copy here at The Oak Initiative website: http://www.theoakinitiative.org/pdfs/teamb/15-Shariah-The-Threat-to-America-Team-B-Report-Web-285-308.pdf

Misleading headline:"CARY man" - ? Really? No, he is a Pakistani man who lists a residence in Cary. Just because he resides in Cary city limits does not make him a "Cary man." News media should distinguish between an American, versus a foreigner enjoying the benefits of living in America while providing material support to its enemies.
