CARY, N.C. — A downtown Cary auto shop is spreading the holiday spirit by offering two days of free repairs.

Proficient Auto Mobile Mechanics at 159 E. Chatham St. will provide free repairs to the public on Dec. 4 and 5. Robert Koenekamp, owner of the shop, said he’s providing the repairs to help less fortunate people in the community.

"I'm blessed, I want to pass that along," Koenekamp said. "Given that your vehicle is an important factor in day-to-day life, I felt this would be the most beneficial way of giving back to those in need."

In order to maximize the number of people he can help, Koenekamp said he is limiting the kind of repairs provided.

Koenekamp said his team will do work that usually does not take longer than an hour, which will allow as many people as possible to receive free auto work.

"People need their car it's their lifeline," Koenekamp said.

Customers will need to provide their own parts, but Koenekamp said he can provide a wholesale price on parts.

Repairs that will be offered include those to drive belts, brake pads and rotors, alternators and starters, tune ups, oil changes, valve cover gaskets for 4-cylinder vehicles, mounting and balancing tires and suspension work.

The shop will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for repairs.

“Given the holidays and the down economy, I want to offer an opportunity for the less fortunate, while at the same time instilling the gift of giving,” Koenekamp said.

“Hopefully people will be touched enough to look at what they can do to give back and help others."
