Carrboro towing plan could benefit drivers, companies

The first proposal would see a higher towing charge. Carrboro currently caps what a towing service can charge at $100.

"Increasing it to $125 would put us more in line with some of our neighboring towns and cities," said Alderman Damon Seils.

He and the rest of the board are considering the change after a request from Barnes Towing. In a letter to the aldermen, Barnes asked for the price to be bumped to $125 for those who pay cash and $150 for credit or debit.

Seils is not sold. "Twenty-five dollars for a credit card payment, that seemed excessive," he said.

Still, he said be'd think about the request. 

"I wanted to take some time to review proposed changes and talk to town staff about their concerns," Seils said.

The other proposal on the table would help drivers avoid a tow altogether.  A new regulation clarifies how many signs a lot must have, what the signs must say and how they must look.

Driver David Reid thinks additional signage will help. He's not as fond of the price hike. 

The Carrboro Aldermen are expected to take up the towing changes in the next few weeks.
