— Construction crews topped off the 325-foot hill Thursday that will start the ride on Carowinds' new roller coaster, the Fury 325.

The coaster, which is set to open in the spring, is the centerpiece of a park renovation and promises to be the world's tallest and fastest "giga coaster."

Carowinds is investing $50 million over the next couple of years in upgrades that will include new rides and attractions, signature Carolina food offerings and entertainment.

The Fury will fling riders over that first steep hill into an 81-degree drop, then through 6,602 feet of hills and curves at speeds of up to 95 mph.

I hope it's safe, and stay together.

We haven't been to Carowinds since 2010. It felt old and tired and worn down since Cedar took it over from Paramount. It definitely wasn't how I remembered it from my teenager years. I hope this renovation and new coaster sparks some life back into the park. Cedar Point in Ohio is one of our all time favorite parks so I hope they can channel some of that into Carowinds.

I found it to be rather boring. Up and back down. Launch coasters can be fun but I always love the air I get on the Magnum XL. Millenium Force is a really nice smooth riding coaster. Love me some CP!

Gigacoasters have a traditional lift hill, not a launch. Think "tick tick tick tick" on the way up. This will be the tallest non launched coaster.

It's still not Cedar Point, but then again no place is.

I was slightly confused as well, those are classified as "strata coasters". It would actually be the fifth highest coaster in the world in overall height.

I know nothing about rides, but it may have something to do with the 81 degree drop.
