Carjackings, river rescue precede man's arrest

Police in Horry County said Gregory Allen Spry, 44, of Laurinburg, carjacked a vehicles, wrecked it, stole a second vehicle and tried to jump it over the Waccamaw River.

HORRY COUNTY, S.C. — A North Carolina man was arrested Thursday in South Carolina after a series of carjackings that culminated in a water rescue.

Police in Horry County said Gregory Allen Spry, 44, of Laurinburg, carjacked a vehicles, wrecked it, stole a second vehicle and tried to jump it over the Waccamaw River.

He almost cleared the river, but landed in the water on the far side and was severely injured, police said. A citizen pulled him from the car as police paddled a canoe to reach him.

Spry was being treated at a local hospital Friday, where he was listed in critical condition and was in police custody.
